2019 Election Strategy

Question Title

* 1. Another Liberal or Conservative majority government in 2019, with the current leadership, is unlikely to deliver proportional representation. To make action on proportional representation possible, a primary goal in 2019 should be to ensure that neither of these parties obtain a majority.

Question Title

* 2. In the last federal election, Fair Vote Canada shared the party positions on electoral reform.

We also shared the answers each individual candidate gave to a questionnaire asking about their level of personal commitment to help bring in proportional representation.

Some Liberal candidates who went on to be MPs signed pledges or gave strong commitments to advocate and vote for PR. Almost none followed through with these commitments.

In the upcoming election, Fair Vote Canada would like to focus on party positions and ACTIONS individual MPs have taken, as the primary criteria for assessing their commitment to PR and our support of their candidacy.

Please indicate your level of support for this approach.

Question Title

* 3. To obtain proportional representation in a minority government, we need to elect enough MPs who will support it and be advocates. These MPs will likely need to come from more than one party. As always, we need multi-partisan support.

During the 2015 election, Fair Vote Canada gave information on candidates’ positions, but gave no suggestions about how to vote in each riding and did not endorse candidates.

Would you support Fair Vote Canada to look at each riding in Canada - considering the realistic best case scenario for filling the seat with an MP who supports PR - and recommend one or more candidates?

Question Title

* 4. In 2015, some MPs who personally promised to advocate for PR - then did nothing - won in close swing ridings where they defeated incumbent MPs whose party was firmly committed to PR.

In addition to the strategies above, would you support Fair Vote Canada to select a small number of target ridings and endorse just one pro-PR candidate with a good chance to win in each, and form on the ground teams to elect that pro-PR candidate?
