Hello , We are writing to let you know about a data leak here at Fair Vote Canada. We are unaware of any misuse of your information, but want to tell you about the issue because we take data security seriously. Recently, we discovered that some information from 2020 had been made publicly accessible via a link on an external website. We have investigated further and want to reassure supporters that no credit card or banking information was exposed. The data included names, phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, and, for some individuals, date and amount of a donation. We were quickly able to identify the source of the leak. In 2020 a well-meaning volunteer was given temporary access to data to perform a specific task. He moved the data without our knowledge or permission to a website where whatever security measures might have been there got dropped, inadvertently exposing the data. We have confirmed that the data has now been removed and deleted from the unauthorized location. We understand that this data exposure, even without malicious intent or evidence of misuse, is troubling and unacceptable. In light of this event, we have taken immediate steps to severely restrict access to our database to staff/contractors only. We are moving quickly to implement stricter digital security procedures to prevent a similar situation from ever happening again. Please direct any questions you may have to us at office@fairvote.ca. We apologize for this unfortunate incident, and thank you for your patience and support. Valerie Brooks Co-Chair, Fair Vote Canada Steve Hindle Co-Chair, Fair Vote Canada |
